Reel 05 Annotations
Part 2 of June/July 1956 Lio Matoh trip.
Boat nearly empty going up the Kau Rapids in highish water. It took 40 mins with the 30 horse power engine flat out to go round one rock. The boat is going forward so slowly that one wave goes on overflowing into the boat at the outboard end until the boat gets beyond it. At this stage my film ran out.
At the Pelisan Rapids my boat draws into the side and a discussion takes place.
The boat is unloaded of passengers and is dragged over the rocks.
The Hon'ble Temonggong Oyong Lawai Jau, MBE. QMC in a blue shirt pulls as do Dickie and Merry.
The Temonggong, while bathing, washes his underpants.
Nomadic Penans were requested to dance at Long Semiang, where there was a Trade Meeting.
A fire is lit at the Lio Matoh airstrip to show the direction of the wind.
The Borneo Evangelical Mission Auster lands and takes off.
A Penan runs to to avoid the plane.
An RAF Valetta drops medicines for the Mission and W.H.O DDT for the Anti-Malaria scheme, and powdered milk, which the children enjoyed.
Kenyah children bathing and crossing the river from the airstrip to Lio Matoh.
Going down the Pelisan Rapids with lowish and relatively smooth water.
Roughish water at the Kau Rapids - went down them in 22 seconds.
Bukit Batu Tujoh (7 peaks).
Letting the boat down unknown rapids.
Shooting the Lulu Rapids.
Letting the boat down part of the Katipang Rapids and letting it down the next part.
Women in low water catching tiny fish at Long Pila.
View of Marudi Bazaar and Fort Hose on cliff.

About Ian Urquhart
Ian Urquhart was a decorated British soldier, posted to Sarawak, where he served from 1947 to 1965. A brilliant linguist with an abiding interest in learning about other people and their cultures, he was a natural fit to be a civil service officer.
In addition to his administrative duties, he studied the indigenous communities he encountered focusing on their varied languages. From 1951 to 1959, Ian published several articles published by the Sarawak Museum Journal.
It was during this period that he conducted many trips into the jungles of Sarawak, in particular the Kelabit highlands and the Ulu Baram. From 1957 his wife Bunty accompanied him and contributed to some of the filming.
It was these trips that he documented on Silent Standard/Regular 8mm colour and b/w cinefilm leaving his family and the people of Sarawak with not only a detailed account of his life there, he annotated all 30 reels, 23 of which are available in this collection.
